Recap: AAU/ISF Pan American Schools Beach Volleyball Championships

The AAU and ISF hosted the Pan American Schools Beach Volleyball Championship this past week in Orlando, Florida. The California duo of Ava Kirunchyk and Maya Harvey beat out the competition earning the spot to ISF World Schools Championships in Italy.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), a representative of the International School Sports Federation (ISF) hosted the Pan American Schools Beach Volleyball Championship this past week in Orlando, Florida. The event saw 12 teams in the pool play round on Friday, June 21, which was later cut to six teams for the finals on Saturday, June 22. Teams were represented from California, Florida, Ontario and Puerto Rico.

“The competition is at a high level,” said AAU Beach Volleyball Commissioner, Gino Grajeda. “A lot of these athletes have already signed college scholarships and programs from various universities, so talent level is high and competition level is high as well.”

After a grueling championship match going 21-19 and 21-18, Ava Kirunchyk and Maya Harvey from Redondo Beach and Hermosa Beach, California, respectively, walked away as the 2019 Pan American Schools Beach Volleyball Championships.

With the win, Kirunchyk and Harvey qualified for the United States entry in the ISF World Schools Championships in Italy, October 3 – October 10, 2019.

*Top finishing USA team qualifies for the ISF championship
The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is the United States representative organization for the International School Sport Federation (ISF). The AAU identifies and qualifies teams and athletes for ISF international competition in all sports and the ISF Gymnasiade, multi-sport games. The AAU and IBVL coordinate the ISF qualifying beach volleyball competition in the United States. The ISF World Schools Beach Volleyball Championships take place every two years.
 
In 2017, the AAU/USA Girls U18 team of Sammy Slater (Ventura, CA), Alexis Fillippone (San Diego, CA) and alternate Hannah Martin (San Diego, CA) won the ISF Championships in Papeete, Tahiti. In addition, the AAU/USA Boys U16 team from Westlake High School (IBVL) placed fourth in the competition.
