Longtime AAU Volunteer Passes

Larry Wilson dedicated 50 years to serving the AAU track community

December 8, 2023 – In the heart of AAU’s legacy lies a name, one that resonates with selfless dedication and unwavering commitment—Larry Wilson.

From Military service, to qualifying for the Olympic Trials, to coaching and helping start Ambler Track Club (now Ambler Olympic Club); Larry has volunteered a lifetime to AAU and lived life to the fullest. In October 2022, he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, Montgomery County Chapter for his outstanding contributions to sport.

Larry’s impact and efforts have left a lasting mark on the AAU community. Larry Wilson’s Journey with AAU was nothing short of extraordinary. Larry Wilson’s Journey with the Amateur Athletic Union was nothing short of extraordinary. He was a member of AAU for over 50 years and in 1968, he competed in his first AAU Junior Olympic Games. Just two years later years later he became AAU’s Chairmen of Track and Field and Cross Country for the Middle Atlantic District, which he held for 40 years. He soon rose to be the National AAU Cross Country Chair quickly after and remained in power for more than 25 years.

Larry Received the AAU President’s National Leadership Award in 1994 for his outstanding leadership within the organization. He then followed it up in 1995 with being honored with his 25 Years of Service Pin and receiving the esteemed Don and Pat Kavadas Memorial Award. This recognition echoed Larry’s pivotal role in Track and Field, embodying the spirit of excellence within the sport. In 1996 Larry was inducted into the AAU Hall of Fame. This honor solidified his place among the pantheon of AAU’s most esteemed individuals, a testament to his enduring impact on youth athletics. His dedication and service culminated in the acceptance of the Col. William Tooke Memorial Award in 2007. A pinnacle of recognition withing AAU Youth Athletics. This award was bestowed upon those who exhibit exceptional dedication and service to the AAU Community.

As we fondly remember Larry Wilson, we honor not just his accomplishments but also his spirit of service and dedication. One that defined his remarkable journey in life. He remains a beacon of inspiration and selfless service.
